The best goal in the world can't survive poor execution, which goes to say that goals never fail, only implementation does!
Unless one execute properly and remain focused until completion, the goal, and that means any goal is irrelevant. As a manager effective execution of a goal is very important.

To achieve a goal you have never achieved before, you must start doing things you have never done before. If it requires people to do something different you are driving a behaviour change strategy – and it’s not going to be easy

Now lets try to understand what are the 4 disciplines of execution

1. Focus on the Wildly Important
2. Act on the Lead Measures
3. Keep a Compelling Scoreboard
4. Create a Cadence of Accountability

Here's a quick goal setting videos explaining the 4 disciplines of execution

Summary of the above video.
Focus on the Wildly Important
Focus on less so that your team can achieve more.
Narrow the focus so that the team can distinguish between what is truly top priority and what is the day job.
Wildly Important Goals – WIGs.

Act on the Lead Measures
Lag measures are the tracking measures of the WIGs – the ones you spend most time praying over.
Lead measures are quite different in that they are the measures of the most high impact things your team must do to reach the goal.
A good lead measure has 2 characteristics:
– It’s predictive of achieving the goal
– It can be influenced by the team members
Once you’ve identified your lead measures they become the key leverage points for achieving your goal.

Keep a Compelling Scoreboard
People play differently when they’re keeping score. This is the discipline of engagement.

Create a Cadence of Accountability
Until you apply Discipline 4, your team isn’t in the game.
Unless we consistently hold each other accountable, the goal naturally disintegrates into the whirlwind of day to day operations. Implement a rhythm of regular and frequent (at least weekly) meetings of any team that owns a wildly important goal. Team members create their own commitments, and thus their ownership increases.
